Meter Upgrade A One-Time Process, Credit Balance Will Remain Intact — NEMSA

Customers have been assured by the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) that the ongoing electricity metre update process will not affect the credit unit balance in their metres.

NEMSA’s managing director, Aliyu Tahir, made the assurance in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, addressing the subject of standard transfer requirements for the upgrade of prepaid metres.

According to Tahir, his agency would ensure that all electricity meters and instruments deployed in the sector are of the right standard.

“Let me assure all electricity customers that they have nothing to fear as the meter upgrade process will not affect the credit unit balance on their meters. The credit balance will remain intact after the upgrade,” he said.

“They are also to note that meter upgrade is a one-time process. Subsequent energy token purchases will continue as usual after the upgrade has been completed.”

On August 23, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) asked prepaid meter users to update their meters before November next year.

The commission said prepaid meter users might face difficulties in recharging their meters after November 2024, if the required update is not done before the deadline.

While assuring that the update is free of charge, NERC advised users to get in touch with their respective electricity distribution companies (DisCos) for more information on the process.
