Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tunji Bello, on Tuesday, said the state may experience heavy rainfall that will cause flooding.

Bello made this known at a press briefing organized by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) on the year 2020 seasonal rainfall predictions and prevention of flooding in Lagos State.

The agency predicted 240-270 days while the minimum average rainfall is predicted at 1,750mm this year.

Bello stated: “Worthy of note is the increasing frequency of extreme weather events which indicates that the year 2020 will likely experience days with extremely high amounts may result in flooding,”.

The Commissioner encouraged residents to abstain from random dump of refuse into water channels in order to reduce the effect of flooding that possibly goes along with the expected heavy rainfall.

Bello stated, “I want to assure you that our state will continue to reap the gains of planning, as our flood control measures are being stepped up to contain any unforeseen weather conditions.

“I am glad to note that relevant measures have been put in place in preparation of the rainy season,” he added
