Some unidentified gunmen, believed to be cultists, have killed a well-known shawarma vendor identified only as Benjamin. This incident occurred at Ebutte-Ipakodo, in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.
The victim, also known as Benji, was the owner of the popular Chibest Shawarma in the community. His local business made him a familiar face in the area.
Eyewitnesses reported that the attack took place on Tuesday at approximately 8:30 p.m. Benjamin was reportedly serving customers at his roadside stall when the incident occurred.
According to The Punch, a resident who identified himself only as Samson said that the unidentified gunmen stormed Benjamin’s “fast food spot” and shot him at close range. This account provides a direct witness perspective of the attack.
The resident further stated that the attack was connected to a “cult-related gang rivalry.” This suggests the murder was part of an ongoing conflict between criminal groups.
“He was attending to some customers when two guys walked up to him. At first, we thought they came to buy shawarma, but then, they suddenly pulled out guns and shot him multiple times at close range. Everyone on the spot and those who heard the gunshots ran for their lives. We learnt the gunmen were rival cultists who came on a revenge mission,” he narrated. This detailed quote from the eyewitness describes the sudden and violent nature of the attack and the immediate aftermath.
Another resident, who wished to remain anonymous due to the “sensitive nature of the incident,” stated that the gunmen fled the scene immediately after the shooting. They left Benjamin lying in a pool of blood.
The source indicated that the late Benjamin did not receive timely medical attention due to the chaotic situation that followed the attack. The immediate aftermath of the shooting hindered rescue efforts.
“Benji was left in his pool of blood for a while as no one could go near him due to the way he was shot. It took a little while before some people could move close to the spot. He was later rushed to the hospital where he was confirmed dead,” the source said. This quote details the delay in providing medical assistance and the eventual tragic outcome.
In a social media post observed by the correspondent on Sunday, the deceased victim was described as “hardworking and jovial.” This paints a picture of the victim’s character and his standing within the community.
“Benji was not just popular in the area, he was also friendly and related with almost everyone. People in the area are still shocked at what happened and this has also caused panic in the community.” This quote from the social media post further emphasizes the victim’s positive reputation and the community’s reaction to the violence.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, could not be reached for comment. Calls to his phone went unanswered, and a text message sent to him had not received a reply by the time this report was filed. This lack of official police comment leaves a void in the information available to the public.
Earlier reports had it that a 16-year-old boy, identified only as Mustapha, was killed by a stray bullet during a suspected cult clash in the Oyingbo area of Ebute Metta, Lagos State. This prior incident highlights the ongoing issue of cult-related violence in Lagos.
That incident occurred on Monday, April 21, during a peace walk organized by some youths to address rising cult-related violence in the community. The peace walk itself was tragically disrupted by further violence.
It was gathered that the peace walk had just concluded when an argument broke out among the participants. This suggests that even efforts to promote peace were vulnerable to violence.
The argument reportedly escalated, leading to a suspected cultist pulling out a firearm and shooting indiscriminately. This act of violence resulted in Mustapha being struck by a stray bullet.
