The Independent National Electoral Commission has appointed nine Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN) to defend the results of the February 25 presidential election.
The legal team will be led by former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Abubakar Mahmoud (SAN), and will include Stephen Adehi (SAN), Oluwakemi Pinheiro (SAN), Miannaya Essien (SAN), and Abdullahi Aliyu (SAN), among others.
Four SANs, who are also staff members of INEC’s legal department, are part of the team, along with Garba Hassan, Musa Attah, and Patricia Obi. INEC has allocated over N3bn to defend the results of the February 25 presidential and national assembly elections, as well as the March 18 governorship and state assembly polls.
According to The PUNCH, numerous candidates who lost in the elections have submitted petitions to the presidential and state election petition tribunals to contest the results of the polls.
Over 100 election petitions have been filed by the candidates and their parties throughout the country.
In addition to this, presidential candidates such as Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, Peter Obi of the Labour Party, Solomon Okangbuan of the Action Alliance, and Chichi Ojei of the Allied Peoples Movement have also submitted petitions to nullify the presidential election outcomes.
Candidates who lost in the elections have filed petitions at the presidential and state election petition tribunals to contest the election results.

On March 1, 2023, the Independent National Electoral Commission declared Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, as the winner of the February 25 presidential election.
