Fear Grips Lagos Residents As Louts Operate At Ikeja-Under Bridge

Published

on

Residents and passers-by are currently terrified because the area beneath the bridge on Obafemi Awolowo Road in Ikeja, Lagos, has become a refuge for rogues and mentally ill persons.

Despite the efforts of the Lagos State Task Force, the area known as Ikeja Under Bridge is also used by tiny traders, especially in the evening.

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwoolu, started a revolution in 2020 that restored normalcy to the bridge, but the situation has already returned to pre-intervention levels.

According to The Punch, a visit to the bridge on Monday shows that road users were always scared when passing by the bridge, especially at night because of the presence of fierce-looking louts who were always under the influence of hard drugs or alcohol.

It was further learnt that petty traders pay certain amounts of money to the miscreants so that they can allow them to sell their wares under the bridge.

A trader who identified herself as Omobolanle said the miscreants subjected unsuspecting passersby to sexual harassment at night, apart from dispossessing them of their valuables.

“It is usually risky here at night because I have seen a lot of bad things happening such as sexual harassment, and stealing of phones and wallets. It is very dangerous to be around the bridge at night and early in the morning,” Omobolanle said.

One of the louts seen under the bridge who identified himself as Sola said he resorted to passing the night there because of the high cost of rent.

“It is difficult to get money to rent an apartment in Lagos. Things are too expensive and some of us do not have the money to rent an apartment. We don’t have a choice but we hope one day we will have our own houses or have the money to rent an apartment,” he said.

Efforts to get the reaction of the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, proved abortive as his phone rang out on Monday and messages sent were yet to be responded to as of the time of filing this report.

A group of protesters, led by seven bishops and comprising members of Christ MercyLand Deliverance Ministry, Abuja, and other Christian faiths, on Sunday, gathered at the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) office in Asaba, Delta State.

Defying heavy rainfall, the protesters carried placards with various inscriptions, expressing solidarity with Senior Prophet Jeremiah Fufeyin and condemning alleged attacks by NAFDAC on his spiritual products.

The demonstrators urged NAFDAC to cease its alleged harassment of Prophet Fufeyin, emphasizing the importance of religious freedom and the value of his spiritual contributions.

Some of the placards read, “Spiritual products have spiritual backing, don’t need NAFDAC approval, When it comes to spiritual, respect it among others.

Speaking on behalf of the protesters, the Metropolitan Archbishop of the Charismatic Anglican Church of Nigeria, Samuel Baaba cautioned NAFDAC on spiritual matters.

Baaba said, “We are men of God and we are here in solidarity to send a message to NAFDAC to refrain from its step over spiritual matters.

“NAFDAC does not have the right to regulate spiritual products. There is a limit to what people can do especially when it comes to matters of faith”

Also speaking, Rector Union Theological Institute and Seminary, Port Harcourt, Evangelical Church, Calixtus and Most Celestine Ewurum added that they were only interested in the issue that concerned items that are spiritual.

“To the best of my knowledge and which I have read through the NAFDAC Act, 2004, if there is an amendment, I don’t know, where it could regulate the spiritual product.

“NAFDAC don’t have right to declare the products fake when it never tested the product, NAFDAC should out clearly what is wrong with the water” they added.

The NAFDAC’s Director General, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, on Sunday, alerted Nigerians to the activities of a faith-based organisation, Christ Mercy Land Delivery Ministries, led by Prophet Jeremiah Fufeyin, using the agency’s name to deceive the unsuspecting public

She said none of the products; Miracle & Healing Water, River Jordan Water, among others were registered with NAFDAC, advising the public to stop patronising any of the miracle products.
