The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has closed an unregistered healthcare facility, Dada’s Clinic and Maternity Ltd., located in Kapwa, Gaube community in the Kuje area council of Abuja.
In a statement released on Monday, Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to Nyesom Wike, the FCT Minister, explained that the facility, situated along the main road leading to the community, was shut down on Sunday by the Private Health Establishments Registration and Monitoring Committee (PHERMC).
Olayinka noted that the FCT Director of the Medical and Diagnostics Department led the team.
He mentioned that one Sabiu, who identified himself as the health worker managing the clinic, was arrested and handed over to the police for further investigation.
The statement further explained that the inspection followed reports that the facility was operating without proper registration and was conducting medical procedures in a rented apartment that was unfit for healthcare services, under the pretext of a medical outreach.
Olayinka said Sabiu had acknowledged that the clinic was not officially registered with PHERMC.
Preliminary findings revealed that a community elder had tragically died after undergoing a hernia operation at the facility.
“Additionally, multiple reports emerged of patients who barely survived procedures and required emergency medical care elsewhere,” the statement reads.
“The facility, an unpainted building with burglar-proof ironwork at the entrance, was in a dilapidated and unsanitary condition.
“It lacked windows, doors, and basic amenities such as a reception area, nursing station, bathroom, or toilet.
“The structure had four rooms and a general area, including an unfinished extension in an unacceptable sanitary condition.
“At the time of the visit, three patients were on admission, including an elderly patient receiving intravenous infusion.”
Olayinka added that all patients in the facility were confirmed to be stable and were referred to Kuje General Hospital for proper medical care.
He emphasized that Wike is dedicated to ensuring safe and regulated healthcare services through facility accreditation as a simple process, adding that “there is no excuse for operating illegally”.
