A 30-year-old chief priest, Eno Akpan, has been arrested by the Akwa Ibom State Police Command for allegedly killing his one year and three months old daughter, Favour.

Eno, a native of Ikot Akpan Udo village in the Ikot Abasi Local Government Area, was said to be the custodian of the village’s shrine.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Murtala Mani, said in Uyo on Monday that Eno had a misunderstanding with his wife, Blessing, and beat her up.

The CP, who spoke through the state Police Public Relations Officer, Cordelia Nwawe, explained that during the squabble, Blessing ran to her mother and left her daughter with the suspect.

He said Eno called Blessing to take Favour with her, adding that when she refused, he inflicted machete injuries on the girl’s back and head.

The girl died from the injuries.

He said, “On July 23, at 7.30pm, the complainant, Blessing, had a misunderstanding with her husband, Eno Akpan. In the process, the husband beat her up.

“She left the house for her mother’s place, leaving her daughter behind. The husband asked her to return home to take the child along, but she refused. The husband then used a machete to inflict cuts on the back and head of their daughter. She died on the spot.”

The CP noted that investigation was ongoing into the matter.

Confessing to the crime, Eno, however, said he had a disagreement with his wife after she returned home late from the market where she sold oysters.

According to him, he used his fists on her, but by the time he picked up a machete to strike her, it cut through their daughter.

He said, “She went to sell oysters in the market. When she came back, I tried to inquire why she came back late and that it was becoming a habit for her to return home late from the market.

“Her reply incensed me and I had no other option than to beat her. The moment I picked up a machete to strike her, she threw my daughter at me and the machete landed on her head and back.”

The Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport’s electronic gates (e-gates) were tested on Friday by Interior Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who claimed that 99 percent of the work was completed.

He stated that by the next week, the e-gates would be operational.

Among the other high-ranking government officials that joined Tunji-Ojo were Dr. Aishetu Ndayako, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, and Kemi Nanna Nandap, Comptroller-General of Immigration.

He said the e-gates were being deployed to eliminate human interfaces, reduce bureaucracy and make movements of passengers in and out the country seamless.

The Minister said 29 of the e-gates would be deployed in Lagos, four in Enugu and Kano while Port-Harcourt would have five.

He disclosed that the Airport infrastructure and Command and Control Centres have been subjected to different tests with fake and expired passports rejected while genuine ones were cleared.

Tunji-Ojo said:” With this massive infrastructure, we believe that no unwanted persons or persons of interests can find their ways into Nigeria. Our security through the Airports and in the Airport domains are guaranteed.

“It is a testimony to what Mr President told us from day one on his Renewed Hope Agenda. He asked us to change the narratives and make passengers movements in and out of the country seamless.

“You can see that we have all our team here working in synergy with the authorities of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, (FAAN) the Nigeria Customs Service and other stakeholders.

“I must at this point commend the Minister of Aviation, Hon Festus Keyamo (SAN) and other critical stakeholders who have made this transformation possible.”

Oil Price Surge By 4 Percent As Israel Launches Counterattack On Iran

Published

Oil prices have increased by nearly 4 percent as Israel launched a missile attack on a target in Iran, according to international media reports.

The country’s nuclear plant is located in the central Iranian province of Isfahan, where explosions have been reported.

Later, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) declared that the plant was unharmed.

In reaction to Iran’s last-week missile and drone attacks, Israel had pledged retaliation.

Iran had launched the attacks in response to the April 1 strike that killed its senior security officials at its embassy in Syria apparently carried out by Israel.

A US official told ABC News that Israel carried out a strike inside Iran, confirming reports of the explosion by the Asian country’s media.

There were also reports of blasts in Iraq and southern Syria.

Commercial flights we re-routed as parts of the Iranian airspace were closed.

Iran says it activated its air defence systems.

Israel is not planning further attacks and Iran is not going to retaliate either, according various officials quoted by the media.

Brent crude price is now over $90 per barrel, up from $87 before the strike.

Insurance underwriter, Lasaco Assurance Plc, has donated health recovery items to support the Health Initiative Programme of the National Youth Service Corps members serving in the Ifako Ijaiye Local Government area of Lagos State.

A statement from the firm said that the donation was to boost health development in the country.

Some Corps members, under the aegis of Local Government Initiative, for their first quarter Health Initiative, embarked on a project to provide health services to rural dwellers, whose access to quality health services was limited due to poverty, ignorance and superstition.

Lasaco Assurance supported the corps members to reach the target audience and help them overcome their difficulties in accessing quality health.

The company’s Head of Corporate Communications, Seye Smart, who represented the Head of Strategy, Research and Communications, Dayo Adetokun, at the presentation of the gift items to the corps members, emphasised the importance of exposing the citizens to quality health and safety as that would improve their capacity, make them function well and prolong their life expectancy.

A healthy citizen, she explained, would contribute meaningfully to the growth of society and be useful for the development of humanity.

Leader of the LGI team, Bose Ojimi, said the programme was the group’s modest contribution to the country’s quest for improved health and safety for Nigerians and hoped that other corporate organisations would follow in the footsteps of Lasaco Assurance to offer necessary assistance to the people.
