ASUU Strike: Saboteurs Abound In Buhari’s Administration, From Inner Caucus To Outside — Yahaya Bello

Published

on

Yahaya Bello, governor of Kogi state, says there are saboteurs within the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Describing them as “Judas”, he said the saboteurs are responsible for the lingering strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

ASUU has been on strike since February 14 over the federal government’s inability to meet its demands bordering on the funding of universities as well as salaries and allowances of lecturers.

Several meetings between ASUU and the federal government have ended in a deadlock.

Last week, the strike entered its eighth month – a development that has left students, parents and other stakeholders frustrated.

Speaking with Arise News TV on Wednesday, Bello expressed concern over “our children’s future that is being toyed with”.

He accused the “saboteurs within this administration” of instigating the strike, adding that the culprits will soon be revealed.

“I am deeply concerned about our children’s future that is being toyed with. I tackled the issue of education strikes in Kogi state and there is nothing such as strikes. Unfortunately, this is part of the saboteurs within this administration and outside. Let me admonish the NANS, do not take laws into your hands,” the governor said.

“Everyone including Bola Tinubu and the president is deeply concerned and what should have been done is to remove the political aspects from ASUU and at the appropriate time, we are going to point out to you those that are responsible.

“There are areas we need to work on but in every system, there are saboteurs. There are Judas and we have them abound in this APC administration of President Muhammadu Buhari — from the inner caucus to the outside.

“But that is not to say there are no areas to be improved upon in this government. But the fact is that there are saboteurs. Still, in the midst of all of that, the country is moving on. The president continues to improve our infrastructure.”

ECONOMY: CBN Not Using Foreign Reserves To Defend Naira — Olayemi Cardoso

Published

on

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, asserts that the nation is not defending the value of the naira with its foreign reserves.

He made this known on Wednesday in Washington, DC, where he is attending the International Monetary Fund-World Bank Spring Meetings.

Cardoso said $600 million came into Nigeria’s reserves account within the last two days.

The naira has appreciated against the dollar in recent weeks, gaining over 40%, from about N1,900/$ to about N1,000/$1 now. But while the naira rebound, Nigeria’s foreign reserves are dwindling, dropping to about $32.29 billion on April 15 — the lowest level in over six years.

Cardoso said, “What you’ve seen with respect to the shift in our reserves is normal in any country’s reserves where for example, debt is due and certain payments need to be made because that is also part of keeping your credibility.

“Other times money comes in, it takes it up again. Between yesterday and today, about $600 million came into the reserves account. We are looking towards a market that operates by itself, willing buyers, willing sellers and price discovery.

“The shift in our reserves has really little or nothing to do with defending naira and that is certainly not our objective.”
