Ailing PDP Spokesman, Olisa Metuh Vomits In Court; Case Adjourned.

The spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party, Olisa Metuh, on Thursday again broke down in court with signs of ill health, repeatedly throwing up at the Federal High Court in Abuja, where he is being tried for alleged corruption.

Mr. Metuh’s apparent ill-health led to court to adjourn the case.

The PDP spokesperson is being tried for allegedly receiving N400 million of government arms money.

His counsel, Etiaba Etiaba, said Mr. Metuh’s health condition deteriorated on Wednesday night, forcing his brother-in-law, Andy Aghaji, to rush him to the hospital.

He said on arrival to the hospital, they found that nurses were on strike.

A doctor who attended to Mr. Metuh, directed that be brought back to the hospital on Thursday.

Mr. Etiaba said the doctor had warned that the drugs he administered would make Mr. Metuh drowsy and that he would have to take another medication at 11 am Thursday.

He said the PDP spokesman left the hospital at 3.30 am Thursday morning.

Mr. Etiaba said he advised Mr. Metuh to see if he could manage himself to the court, since he had no understanding about the gravity of his health condition.

At the court, the PDP spokesman began to vomit and had to be assisted to the court room by his relatives.

The counsel prayed the court to adjourn the case to enable Mr. Metuh return to the hospital for treatment.
The prosecution counsel, Sylvanus Tahir, did not object to the application.

The judge adjourned the case till May 23.

INSECURITY: Gunmen Kidnap Kaduna Female Judge, Four Sons, Kill 14-Yr-Old Son

Amed men kidnapped Judge Janet Galadima-Gimba, a customary court judge, and her four sons from their home in the Mahuta area of Kaduna on June 23.

The attackers, estimated to be around 15, struck at night while the judge’s husband, a doctor, was away on duty.

Gloria Ballason, CEO of the House of Justice, condemned the incident and urged authorities to ensure the safe release of the judge and her family.

Tragically, the kidnappers killed the judge’s 14-year-old son, Victor Gimba, in captivity on July 2 after the family failed to meet their ransom demands.

“The abductors, reported to have been about 15, took their captives hostage and demanded a huge sum as ransom,” she said.

“On Tuesday, July 2, 2024, the terrorists shot dead Victor Gimba, the first child of the judge, when the ransom demanded could not be obtained.”

The bandits were said to have demanded a N300 million ransom for their release and had threatened to start killing their victims one after the other if payment was delayed.

Ballason condemned the abduction and the murder, adding that “judicial officers under Article 7 of the United Nations Basic Principles on the Independence of the Judiciary deserve protection and adequate security to enable them to carry out their judicial functions”.

She said the Nigerian state has a constitutional mandate under section 33 and 14(2)b of the 1999 Constitution to guarantee and ensure the safety of the judge, her family, and all citizens.

The chief executive officer described the death of the boy as “’grisly and blood-curdling,” adding that no parent deserves to watch their child being killed in such a manner.

She called on the government, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), and security agencies to take urgent action and ensure the judge and her children are rescued.

Mansir Hassan, spokesperson of the Kaduna state police command, confirmed the incident.

Hassan said the command was doing its best to rescue the victims.

“Yes, we are trying our best to rescue the victims, and for the boy who was killed, an investigation has since commenced,” Hassan said in a response to inquiries made to him.

Band A Customers To Pay N209.5/kwh As DisCos Increase Tariff Again

Published

on

Four electricity distribution companies have announced a price hike for their premium customers in the Band A category, increasing the tariff from N206.80 to N209.50 per kilowatt-hour (kWh).

The DisCos, in separate statements on Wednesday, said the increase took effect from July 1 and applies to prepaid and postpaid customers.

Kaduna DisCo, in a notice posted on X, assured its customers on Band A feeders of continued availability of 20-24 hours supply daily as stipulated in the service-based tariff regime.

The firm also said Bands B, C, D, and E tariff remains unchanged.

Similarly, the Port Harcourt DisCo said the guaranteed availability of a minimum of 20 hours per day still stands, adding that tariff for Bands B, C, D, and E remains unchanged.

“While tariffs for Bands B, C, D, and E remain unchanged, we remain steadfast in our drive to serve all our customers efficiently,” the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) Plc said.

Speaking on the rationale for the hike, Ikeja Electric said the increase aligns with the service-based tariff regime.

“Kindly note the review in tariff of Band “A” feeders from N206.80/kWh to N209.5/kWh effective 1st July 2024 in line with the service-based tariff regime,” the statement reads.

“The tariff for Bands B, C, D and E remains unchanged.”

The Ikeja DisCo said the development will further sustain the improved service delivery currently being experienced across all feeder bands within its network.

On May 6, DisCos announced a reduction in the tariff of customers under the Band A classification to N206.80 per kilowatt-hour (kwh).

The slash came over a month after the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) approved an increase in electricity tariff for customers under Band A to N225 per kwh — from N66 — on April 3.

Customers under this classification receive 20 hours of electricity supply daily.
