BREAKING: Tension In Daura As Protesters Troop To Former President Buhari’s Residence, Emir’s Palace

Published

On Thursday, a large group of angry protesters converged on the Daura residence of former President Muhammadu Buhari in Katsina State, joining the nationwide #EndBadGovernance demonstrations.

The protesters, frustrated with the country’s economic situation, attempted to breach the security of Buhari’s home.

The demonstrations, which turned violent in some states, resulted in reported deaths and prompted at least three governors to impose curfews to restore order.

The protesters’ actions reflect the growing discontent among Nigerians who are demanding improved governance and economic relief.

“They set up bonfire in front of the former President’s house and were chanting loudly,” a witness told Daily Trust via telephone on Thursday.

In a video reviewed by Daily Trust, young persons were seen shouting on top of their voices.

“Bama yi! Bama yi! Bama yi!,” the crowd chorused in Hausa.

The term, which literarily translates as “we don’t want”, is usually used as a form of disapproval during protests.

It took the intervention of an unidentified person who came out of Buhari’s residence to address the angry youths.

The person, according to the witness, asked the mob to select one person to speak, while he would be recorded and the video shown to the Nigerian leader.

After this, the angry youths reportedly headed for the palace of the Emir of Daura, Alhaji Farouk Umar Farouk.

One of them was reportedly shot on the leg by security operatives who were trying to disperse them but the protesters refused to back down.

According to a resident of Daura, who wouldn’t want his name mentioned, “I was at my place of work organising speech and prize event for our students when the protest began. I was briefed about what happened. I learnt that the protesters took to the residences of former President Muhammadu Buhari, the Emir of Daura and Magajin Garin Daura.

“While returning home from my place of work, I moved through the residence of Alhaji Musa Uba, the Magajin Gari, a senior traditional title holder in Emirate, and can confirm that some minor damages had been done there. He was reportedly against the protest and that could be the reason the protesters attacked his house. They threw stones at the house but the situation was contained by security operatives. The palace of the Emir is being guarded by the army and police. As we speak, Daura is calm.”

Afrobeat star, Femi Kuti has pointed out that his own ethnic group, the Yoruba, has been the biggest adversary to his family.

Speaking at the 2024 Felaberation Festival in Lagos, Femi specifically mentioned former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the late businessman MKO Abiola as significant enemies of the Kuti family.

He acknowledged his father and grandmother as prominent Pan-Africanists, further emphasizing that his family was raised without tribalistic tendencies, drawing inspiration from Pan-Africanism.

Addressing the crowd, Femi stated, “Brothers and sisters, something very important is going on in our lives; ethnic problems. You call it tribalism. Please, do not bring the Anikulapos in your stupidity.”

He continued by saying, “We grew up with Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Marcus Garvey, Patrice Lumumba, Mrs Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, and Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

“Pan-Africanism was the order of the day. So, I didn’t grow up being sentimental. I saw good people, bad people. I’ve got great European friends, I’ve got terrible European friends. I’ve got great African friends, I’ve got terrible African friends.

“One of our [the Kuti family’s] greatest enemies as you know are Yoruba people; Obasanjo or Abiola. We are not tribalistic in our family.”

Who Did You Charge To Court If Drugs Were Found In My House? — Ashiru To NDLEA

Published

on

Oyelola Yisa Ashiru, deputy majority leader of the senate, has denied the allegation by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) that drugs were found in his home.

Ashiru’s denial followed the NDLEA’s claim that the senator representing Kwara south was “bad mouthing” the agency due to the alleged drug discovery.

Last week, Ashiru referred to the NDLEA as the “most corrupt and compromised government agency,” prompting the agency to make the claim.

In a statement on Monday, Ashiru, through his legislative aide Olaitan Adeyanju, questioned why the agency did not file charges if drugs were indeed found in his home.

Ashiru stated, “As a matter of fact, Senator Ashiru never employed any aid bearing Ibrahim Mohammed and Mohammd Yahaya as bandied by NDLEA.”

He also mentioned that the NDLEA had searched his Ilorin house and found nothing incriminating, adding, “If any drugs were found on certain persons mentioned by the NDLEA, it is rational to ask at which court of law were the culprits charged?”

Furthermore, the senator clarified that none of the individuals mentioned by the agency have any association with him, and called on the NDLEA to address its internal issues rather than engaging in media trials.

Ashiru concluded by urging the NDLEA to “fish out bad eggs rather than seeking cheap publicity.”
