Traffic Robbers On The Rampage As Lagos Collapsed Bridge Causes Gridlock

Published

on

Armed men have started seizing the opportunity of the gridlock being caused by the collapsed section of the Ijora-Olopa Bridge in Lagos to dispossess unsuspecting motorists and passers-by of their valuables.

It was earlier reported that a portion of the bridge caved in on Tuesday and traffic was quickly diverted to the other lane. The diversion led to gridlock on the road.

It was gathered that hoodlums had been attacking motorists inside the gridlock, especially towards the evening. The miscreants target their victims’ phones, money, and other valuables.

An eyewitness, who did not want his name mentioned because of fear of victimization, said some hoodlums attacked a lady in the traffic with a knife and dispossessed her of her belongings on Wednesday.

He said other victims were saved by some soldiers who were passing by at the time of the attack.

The source said, “A lady was robbed yesterday (Wednesday) night. She was in her car and the armed robbers pulled out a knife to frighten her, and unfortunately, she was dispossessed of her belongings on the spot.

“The robbers used the knife to injure her on the face and she was soaked in blood.

“Four armed robbers in a tricycle also attempted to rob a man, but the attack was foiled because some soldiers were passing by. The robbers fled the scene on sighting the soldiers.”

Another road user, while corroborating the source’s claim, called for more caution while plying the road.

He also called on the government to speed up the rehabilitation work on the collapsed section.

“There is a need for total repair of the bridge. When walking or driving on the bridge, one must also be conscious so as not to be robbed,” he said.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, could not be reached for comment on Thursday as calls made to his mobile phone rang out and a message sent to his telephone had yet to be responded to as of the time this report was filed.

But when contacted, the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Area ‘C’ Command, Surulere, Adedeji Afolarin, who spoke with PUNCH Metro, on Thursday, assured residents and motorists in the area that proper action would be taken.

“There is no problem. Thank you for the information. I will get across to the DPO that covers that area and necessary action will be taken,” Afolarin said.

An official of the Federal Road Safety Corps seen on the bridge told our correspondents that the affected section had been cordoned off and manned by officers to avert any danger for road users by directing them to the alternate routes.

He said, “Motorists that usually ply this road are being directed to take Iganmu Bridge. For motorists going towards Apapa, you just need to follow through Iddo. From Iddo, you move to Costain and from Costain to Iganmu Bridge and then straight down to Apapa. That is the only way for now.

“We have been here since we received the call on Tuesday, redirecting motorists who are unaware of the collapse to take alternative roads. You can see that we have demarcated the entire bridge from usage. This bridge collapsed on Tuesday between 9.30 am and 10 am.”

Meanwhile, our correspondents saw some engineers drafted to the scene to assess the situation.

The engineers, however, could not confirm when rehabilitation would commence on the collapsed bridge.

When approached, one of them said, “We don’t know yet when rehabilitation will start. We learned about it yesterday (Wednesday).

“We have only come here to assess the cause of the collapse and take the report back to the office.

“It is after this that we will know when work will begin. But for now, we are only observing and measuring the cause. We cannot say when construction will start.”

The Federal Roads Maintenance Agency’s spokesperson, Mrs. Maryam Sanusi, could not be immediately reached as of the time this report was filed.

But the Federal Government on Wednesday directed the immediate closure of the bridge “following the discovery that some miscreants have tampered with the major reinforcement elements of the deck from underneath which led to the failure of a section of the Bridge along Ijora Olopa Road, beside Water Corporation, Ijora.”

The Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, SAN, in a Press Statement signed by his Special Adviser on Communications, Hakeem Bello, identified the failed section as the Ijora-Olopa inward Ijora-Oloye–Apapa.

According to the statement, roads leading directly to the bridge such as Costain inward Eko Bridge and Carter Bridge descent inward Ijora Oloye have, as a result, been closed to traffic.

Eid al-Adha: Speaker Obasa Calls For Compassion For The Needy, Urges Nigerians To Unite As One

Published

on

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Dr) Mudashiru Obasa has emphasised the importance of compassion and charity towards the less fortunate in society.

The Speaker said this in a heartfelt message marking the celebration of Eid al-Adha, which was released to the public ahead of the festival by his Chief Press Secretary, Dave Agboola.

Speaker Obasa highlighted the essence of Eid al-Adha, which commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God. He drew parallels between this spirit of sacrifice and the modern-day necessity of aiding the disadvantaged. “As we celebrate this significant occasion,” he noted, “let us remember those who are less fortunate. Compassion should be at the core of our hearts, motivating us to support the needy among us.”

He called on residents of Lagos State, especially the Muslim ummah, to extend their hands in kindness and participate in charitable acts, whether through donations, food distribution, or other forms of assistance to those facing hardships. “I encourage everyone to open their hearts and contribute to the welfare of others. It is through our collective efforts that we can alleviate suffering and build a more inclusive society,” he stated.

In the sallah message, Obasa stressed the need for individuals to embody the spirit of sacrifice in their daily lives, not only during festive periods but throughout the year. He reminded the public that sharing and caring for others fosters a sense of belonging and creates a more harmonious society.

The Speaker also reflected on the values of unity and community that Eid embodies, encouraging citizens all over the country to come together regardless of their differences. “Eid al-Adha teaches us the power of togetherness. Let us embrace our diversity and strengthen our bonds as a community, ensuring that no one is left behind,” he added.

Dr Obasa further extended his warm greetings to all Muslims in Lagos State, urging them to celebrate safely and responsibly while reflecting on the deeper meanings of the holiday. “Let us celebrate with gratitude and a renewed commitment to helping people around. May this Eid bring peace, joy, and prosperity to us all,” he concluded.

Tinubu Had The Guts To End Petrol Subsidy, Past Leaders Lacked The Will — Wike

Published

on

Nyesom Wike, minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), has said that President Bola Tinubu showed exceptional bravery by eliminating the petrol subsidy on his first day in office.

Wike made this statement on Thursday during the 2025 distinguished personality lecture held at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun state.

The theme of the lecture was “The Nigeria of Our Dreams”.

According to the FCT minister, Tinubu set himself apart from previous leaders who, in his view, only talked about removing the subsidy without taking any action.

Leaders before him all spoke about the evil of fuel subsidy, but none had the courage to dare the blackmail of removing it, Wike said.

Tinubu did and is fittingly grappling with the inevitable, unintended and sometimes orchestrated consequences of this removal.

He said that as a result of the removal, states now have increased resources for development, public debt is no longer increasing, and fuel prices are gradually aligning with market forces due to regulatory enforcement.

‘NIGERIA’S MAIN PROBLEM IS BAD LEADERSHIP’

Wike pointed out that the major issue Nigeria continues to face is poor leadership.

He cited Chinua Achebe’s The Trouble with Nigeria, stressing that the absence of sound leadership remains the nation’s most persistent challenge.

This statement, damaging as it may appear, is extremely difficult to controvert, he said.

He said most of Nigeria’s leaders have come into power through self-interested arrangements that rarely prioritize national growth, whether under military or civilian rule.

He stated that Tinubu has proven himself to be a leader with integrity, foresight and determination.

Wike characterized the president as someone who takes well-informed, forward-thinking and practical decisions, and who leads with determination and courage.

The leader we need must believe in the infinite possibilities that Nigeria exemplifies while taking solid, proactive, logical and well-informed decisions that would maximally actualise her potential, he said.

This leader must have the courage and audacity to act, build, innovate and generally expand the frontiers of development with a hands-on approach that would emphasise excellence over mediocrity.

He added that Tinubu’s governance record in Lagos and his deep dedication to democratic values make him well-qualified for the presidency.

He has shown in several ways and at different times a stout commitment to the enthronement of democracy in our country, to the extent of even putting his own life on the line in the process, he said.

He has shown great capacity for engendering development, as captured in the unprecedented rapid and exponential development of Lagos state under his watch and even beyond.

‘TRUE FEDERALISM BEING RESTORED’

Wike also highlighted Tinubu’s initiatives to decentralise authority and encourage growth at the regional level.

The overwhelming cry of over-centralisation of power and resources at the national level and the attendant abuse of the doctrine of federalism are being systematically addressed, he said.

He explained that this is happening through the creation of regional commissions tasked with pushing development in their respective areas, enabling power to return to the people.

In terms of national security, Wike said Tinubu is enhancing personnel capabilities through training and retraining.

He mentioned that the president’s approval of forest guard recruitment marks a significant step in eliminating sanctuaries used by criminals and terrorists.

Bandits and terrorists would no longer find incubation points and free territories to operate, he said.

Put simply, the era of banditry and terrorism would soon come to an end.

He concluded by saying that all these efforts show Tinubu’s determination to set Nigeria on a path of progress.

Ignore Critics Of Lagos-Calabar Road Project, They Don’t Know What They’re Talking About — Tinubu to Umahi

Published

on

President Bola Tinubu has urged the minister of works, David Umahi, to disregard those who are criticizing the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway initiative.

Tinubu made this statement in Lagos on Thursday at the event marking the commencement of the deep-seaport access road reconstruction.

Back on May 31, Tinubu officially commissioned the first completed 30km section of phase one of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway.

Despite this milestone, the unveiling of section one has been met with backlash since it accounts for less than five percent of the entire 700km project.

The highway project was initially launched by Tinubu in March 2024, with Hitech Construction Company Ltd awarded the contract.

At the seaport access road event, Tinubu responded to concerns over the project’s expenses, saying those who are dissatisfied could consider alternative routes.

He reiterated his administration’s dedication to providing sustainable infrastructure to serve the nation’s needs.

Tinubu directed Umahi to move forward with the planning and construction of additional segments of the Lagos-Calabar highway.

“I appeal to you, David, don’t listen to those critics. They don’t know what they are talking about,” Tinubu said.

“If they don’t like the road or if it’s too expensive, toll it for them. They could go to Idumota.”

“My own is to affirm our commitment to deliver enduring infrastructure across our great nation.”

“Forget all the misconceptions; you are a doer, thinker, and great professional, David.”

“On my way here, I witnessed the significant progress of section 2 of the Lagos-Calabar highway project, with 10km out of a 55km stretch already done.”

“I’m also pleased to report ongoing works at the Cross River and Akwa-Ibom sections and have directed that more segments be designed and procured. Go ahead and do the job.”
