Medical Trip: Buhari Has Ignited Power Tussle Among Aso Rock Cabals – HURIWA

Published

on

Civil rights advocacy group, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, on Monday, chastised the President, Muhammadu Buhari, for his frequent medical trips overseas.

It was reported that Buhari on Sunday traveled to the United Kingdom on a two-week routine medical check-up after attending the United Nations Environmental Programme in Nairobi, Kenya.

Reacting, HURIWA, in a statement by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, faulted the President, saying he “perpetually travels to London for a medical checkup while leaving the health sector in Nigeria to wobble amid constant strikes and underfunding.”

The group also said it was regrettable that the President serially disrespects the 1999 Constitution by not officially transmitting power to Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), whenever he travels abroad.

This, the group said, has created the vacuum that will lead to power tussles among the different power blocs in Aso Rock including the infamous cabal.

The statement read in part, “In recent years, the UK has become a choice destination for the Nigerian elite including the President who frequent London for medical tourism while perpetual industrial actions, lack of modern equipment, failure of government to pay doctors’ salaries, amongst others, mar Nigeria’s health sector.

“According to reports, as of the end of 2021, Buhari had been to London for medical checkups a number of times and had spent a total of over 200 days on medical leave in the UK since his regime began on May 29, 2015.

“Despite Buhari’s preference for foreign medical care, the Federal Ministry of Health has consumed over N2.3tn from 2016 to date, while the State House Medical Centre has received over N6.2bn, according to the respective appropriation acts available on the website of the Budget Office of the Federation.

“The presidential clinic caters for the President, Vice President, their families, and members of staff of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
But despite the huge allocations for the clinic, Buhari and his family members continue to patronize the UK, Dubai, and other foreign countries for medical needs.

“The President is also infamous for not handing over power to his VP while away, an action that HURIWA declared unconstitutional.

“Before Sunday’s trip, the last time the President reportedly transferred power to the VP was in 2017 when he spent months in the UK treating an undisclosed ailment.

“But as a sharp departure from the convention, Buhari on Sunday before his aircraft took off from the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, said Osinbajo is in charge while he is away.”

Before traveling, Buhari was asked by reporters who would be in charge during his trip.

The President said, “I cannot claim to be doing the work alone. The government is fully represented. The Vice President is there.

“Constitutionally when I am away, he is in charge. And then the Secretary to the Government (Boss Mustapha), and the Chief of Staff (Ibrahim Gambari) are also there. So, there is no problem.”

Reacting, HURIWA said, “However, it was clear that the President acted illegally as he did not notify the National Assembly as permitted by the country’s constitution.”

The group said, “By virtue of Section 145(1)(2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2011 as amended, the President has a constitutional duty to always transmit power whenever he embarks on a medical trip or any form of vacation whatsoever.

“Section 145(1)(2) of the 1999 Constitution unambiguously provides that: “(1) Whenever the President is proceeding on vacation or is otherwise unable to discharge the functions of his office, he shall transmit a written declaration to the president of the Senate and the speaker of the house of representatives to that effect, and until he transmits to them a written declaration to the contrary, the Vice-President shall perform the functions of the President as Acting President.

“(2) In the event that the President is unable or fails to transmit the written declaration mentioned in subsection (1) of this section within 21 days, the National Assembly shall, by a resolution made by a simple majority of the vote of each House of the National Assembly, mandate the Vice-President to perform the functions of the office of the President as Acting President until the President transmits a letter to the President of the Senate and Speaker of the House of Representatives that he is now available to resume his functions as President.

“But Buhari has not respected the constitution by officially handing power over to his VP pending his return. Transmission of power has a process and a method spelled out by the constitution; it must be written and transmitted to the National Assembly; it is beyond mere rhetorics. Buhari’s action is condemnable just as his many medical trips cost taxpayers’ so much.

“By his vague utterance, Buhari has created the vacuum that will throw up power tussles by the different power blocs in Aso Rock including the infamous cabal.

“Overall, it is a scandal of unimaginable dimension that Buhari has spent seven years in power but all the strategic sectors of the economy have been ruined by his regime, starting from health, education, infrastructure, power, amongst others. It is even unfortunate that the President who is also the Minister of Petroleum and controls the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has successfully turned the near-moribund refineries into a cash cow for the last seven years. Buhari has left the country in comatose, such a bad second term gift.”

Climb Down From Your High Horse, Tinubu Won’t Get Rid Of Wike For You, He Values Loyalty —- Fayose To Fubara

Published

Ayodele Fayose, former governor of Ekiti, says President Bola Tinubu will not ditch Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), for Siminalayi Fubara, Governor of Rivers, to resolve the political crisis in the state.

Speaking during an interview on Arise TV, Fayose said Tinubu values loyalty, political strength and influence, noting that the president would not sacrifice Wike’s standing for Fubara.

“Let me say this to Nigerians: the Asiwaju that I know, the president of Nigeria that we know, will not get rid of a Wike for a Fubara,” Fayose said.

“Wike came from Rivers to support President Tinubu. Wike is performing [as FCT minister]. We never had it so good in Abuja, even a blind man can’t deny that.

“At this stage of his life, even when he is no longer the minister of FCT, Wike is a man who has done well for himself in the political space. You will always need Wike. Let me tell you the truth.”

Fayose advised Fubara to reconcile with Wike by honouring the agreement he signed with the FCT minister.

“I want to advise Governor Fubara again. Please, Fubara, I am begging you, go and make certain amends and be at peace,” he said.

Fayose also commented on the title of “001” in Rivers politics, warning Fubara against challenging Wike’s authority.

“There’s a difference between the office and 001. What brought about the 001? Who gave you the platform to call yourself the 001? It is a sad narrative for Governor Fubara to be struggling. Rather, he should manage the situation.

“Even if Wike is saying he is the leader, it is not to the mouth of Fubara to be contesting that. We all know the truth,” he said.

The former governor appealed directly to Fubara to seek peace and reconciliation. “Let me tell you again. I want to advise Governor Fubara again. Please, Governor Fubara, I’m begging you, go and make amends and be at peace.”

Responding to claims that Fubara had already apologised to Wike, Fayose distinguished between genuine remorse and apologies made merely to calm tensions.

“Those people leading on Governor Fubara, if Governor Fubara goes down today, they will run away. People who were saying I should fight back those days, they were not there when I was isolated and when I was alone,” he said.

Fayose added that Fubara must learn from past political lessons.

“The emergency rule was all-winning for Governor Fubara. By now, Governor Fubara would have been history because the moment you are impeached, you’re out of the way. You can’t contest. If you read the context of President Tinubu, he took the governor, Governor Fubara, to the cleaners. It is time for Governor Fubara to learn. Learn the way I learned my lesson after my first tenor,” he said.

He concluded by urging Fubara to respect both constitutional obligations and Political mentorship. “The Constitution is binding on you, binding on me and binding on Rivers people. That is the more reason why Governor Fubara, I’m saying it again, climb down from his high horse, look for his brother, his leader, the man who was thoughtful enough to say among all you brides, I will marry you, come to the office of the governor.”

Wike began campaigning against Fubara’s re-election in December after accusing the governor of reneging on an agreement they both signed before Tinubu lifted the emergency rule in Rivers State.

Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, aligned with Wike, had also accused Fubara of spending state funds without approval.

Last Thursday, the lawmakers initiated impeachment proceedings against Fubara and Ngozi Odu, the deputy governor of Rivers, over allegations of “gross misconduct”.

Fayose, who was impeached in 2006 during his first term as governor, said people advising Fubara to move against Wike would abandon him if the lawmakers impeach him.

“If Fubara goes down today, they will run away. People who were saying I should fight back those days were not there when I was isolated. I was alone,” he said.

Fayose said Tinubu has a strong aversion to ingratitude and places a premium on loyalty.

“It is time for Governor Fubara to learn. Learn the way I learned my lesson after my first tenure,” he said.

Fayose added that Wike’s influence is crucial to the All Progressives Congress (APC) electoral victories in Rivers and the FCT.

He said the names of those who scaled the nomination process would be submitted to the Afobaje (Kingmakers) today.

“It was a peaceful process. It is now the turn of the Afobaje to do their traditional work of selecting the next Awujale.’’

He said the Afobaje would pick one of the candidates as the next Awujale, and subsequently, the ruling house would forward his name to the Ogun State Government.

“I pray God to guide them in the exercise so that they can give us an Awujale that will make Ijebu Ode great.”

Asked how the choice would be made, Otunba Owoyemi said: “The one that the oracle will pick is among the 85 that went through the nomination process.

“The kingmakers will select the best king for us.

“We thank God that there was no commotion throughout the process. Everything went smoothly, and there was no rancour. Everything has ended well. So we look forward to the next stage.

‘’We hope the kingmakers and Ogun State Government will do well to select one candidate among the nominees that aligns with the yearnings of Fusengbuwa Ruling House, their ancestors and Almighty God as revealed by the Oracle (Ifa).’’

He said the next stage is now for them to transmit the names of the candidates to the kingmakers to do justice to the selection process.

100,000 US Visas Revoked Since Trump’s Return… 8,000 Students Affected —- State Department

Published

on

The US State Department says it has revoked over 100,000 visas since President Donald Trump returned to the White House last January for a second term.

In November 2025, the State Department said 80,000 visas had been revoked since January.

The majority of the revocations involved business and tourist travellers who overstayed their visas.

In an X post on Monday, the State Department said 8,000 of the revoked visas were held by students, while 2,500 specialised workers also lost their legal status.

A department spokesperson added that most of the students and workers whose visas were revoked had criminal encounters with law enforcement.

Nearly 500 students lost visas for drug possession and distribution, while hundreds of foreign workers lost visas because they were believed to be abusing children, according to a department spokesperson.

Half of the revocations for specialised workers were based on drunken driving arrests.

Last August, the Trump administration announced it was reviewing all 55 million foreigners who have valid US visas.

“We will continue to deport these thugs to keep America safe,” the state department wrote in the X post.

When Trump began his second term, he declared a national emergency at the southern border in his inaugural address and promised to tackle “illegal” immigration.

The US has since tightened its visa requirements, announcing changes in its visa policies and implementing travel restrictions on multiple countries, including Nigeria.
