2023: North Will Vote Competence, Insecurity Has Taught Us Lessons – Ango Abdullahi

Published

on

Ango Abdullahi, the convener of the Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF), has that the North would only support the presidential candidate that would lead the country with integrity, competence, compassion, and the fear of God in the 2023 general election after.

Abdullahi, former Vice-Chancellor of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State, Prof. spoke at a book launch in Kaduna on Thursday.

He noted that the region would not support any candidate like the one that had disappointed the entire country and indeed, the region twice.

Abdullahi also warned that the North would not be intimidated to make a choice of a candidate that won’t effect “real change” in present-day Nigeria in 2023.

He added that northern votes would make an impact on the 2023 general election, noting that the current campaign through religion and ethnicity to divide the region would fail.

The former Vice-Chancellor said, “the North will participate in all political and electoral activities as equals, and with respect to other Nigerians who respect us. The North wants leaders who will lead with integrity, competence, compassion, and the fear of God.

“We will not support a candidate that fails to convince that he will radically improve the quality of governance and the integrity of leaders. Secondly, northerners will not be intimidated into making choices that do not improve the chances of real changes in their current circumstances.

“We will participate in all political and electoral activities as equals, and concerning other Nigerians who respect us. In the North, we consider attempts to create divisions and conflicts around religion as hostile acts.

“We have paid a high price in conflicts around religion in the North, and we do not need to do more. Our insecurity and collapsing economy do not discriminate between Christians and Muslims.

“We cannot seek solutions from them as Muslims or Christians. I have to state here that we are witnessing some of the crudest and most unproductive campaigns to create divisions between Hausa and Fulani people, and create distances between Christians and Muslims in the North.

“We warn that these contemptible attempts will fail because they find no support in history, going back centuries, or in the recent past. While we differ in faith and ethnicity, history, and geography, our experiences in living as Nigerians have created roots and bonds that cannot be destroyed by desperate political gambits.

“Thirdly, we will be more critical than all others over who wins our support. We bore scars from governance by one we substantially voted into power twice. Northern votes will make a major impact in the 2023 elections as well, but they will be cast by people who are now wiser and more discerning.”

FG Revokes 924 Inactive Mining Licences — Solid Minerals Minister Alake

Published

on

924 inactive mineral licences have been withdrawn by the Federal Government via the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development.

Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Development and Minerals, revealed this information on Wednesday in an Abuja press conference.

There are 273 small-scale mining licences, 101 quarry licences, 20 mining leases, and 528 exploration licences among the revoked permits.

November of last year saw the ministry withdraw 1,633 mineral titles that had been issued to mining corporations that had not complied.

In order to make the solid minerals industry more competitive internationally, the minister also pledged to clean it up and asked all parties involved to start acting morally again.

But speaking at the briefing, Alake said the ministry decided after identifying a problem of licence racketeering among players in the sector.

He said, “In line with constitutional provisions, we ensured that adequate notice was given to the concerned parties through the official gazette of the Federal Republic of Nigeria no 227 which was published on December 27, 2023.

“This notice gave all concerned parties 30 days to regularise their status including clarifications on what caused the licence to be dormant.

“In view of the above, which shows our adherence with due process and fair consideration and in line with the standard policy of use it or lose it, I hereby revoke the 924 dormant licences with immediate effect.

“These include 528 exploration licences, 20 mining leases, 101 quarry licences and 273 small-scale mining licences.”

There were hints, on Wednesday, that the nation’s Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, might have halted Dana Airline operations.

The instruction was issued in response to the April 23 incident involving a Dana Air aircraft at Lagos airport, which compelled aviation officials to reroute flights from the local airport to the international one.

According to earlier reports, on Tuesday at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, one of the airline’s aircraft, registered under the registration number 5N BKI, went off the runway.

While the details surrounding the incident were not readily available as at press time, no casualty was recorded, as passengers safely disembarked using the front exit door.

The last time the airliner nearly got into major accident was on May 3, 2022, when no fewer than 50 passengers who were onboard a Lagos-bound aircraft were rescued after its tyres caught fire.

The airplane involved was scheduled to take off from Port Harcourt International Airport enroute Lagos. As in that incident, there were no casualties also.
