National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus The ruling party, the All Progressive Congress (APC) has been accused of collusion with the national electoral body, INEC, in a bid to subvert democracy. This allegation was made on Thursday by the national chairman of the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus.

Playing host to a delegation from the European Union (EU), the party leader said indications all point to the possibility of a sham election come 2019. He pointed to the smooth transition of power which the PDP ensured happened when it lost the presidential elections in 2015, expressing its fear that the APC has no plan to play fair.

Secondus said, “What we see is marshal system of framing-up opposition leaders and trying to intimidate them. They are not ready to observe the rule of law and there is no democracy without the rule of law.“We conducted election in 2015, the party and the presidential candidate did not go to court, we had a smooth transition because we believe in the rule of law.

“Nigeria, as the largest black nation on the globe, cannot afford crisis because of the huge effect it would have on the continent and the entire global democratic community if democracy is truncated.” He asked that the EU and other international agencies should keep an eye on the nation especially in the run up to the election and also during the election. This, he opined, would pressure the APC and INEC into conducting free and fair elections in 2019.
