A 24-year-old 200-level Material Science Engineering student at the Kwara State University, Oluwadara Adedayo, is lying critically ill in the hospital after sustaining serious injuries while running away from armed policemen attached to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Lagos State Police Command.

Adedayo who spoke to Punch, said he was in Lagos undergoing his Industrial training when he was accosted by some policeman at Cele bus stop as he was heading towards the Yaba area of the state last Monday. They searched his phone and also his modem and found nothing incriminating. Instead of letting him go, they ordered him into their vehicle. He resisted and ran away from them. While they were pursuing him, he jumped off a bridge and sustained serious injuries.

“They ordered me to enter the bus they brought and I refused. I demanded to know what I did to warrant me entering their bus but they did not say anything, only for them to bundle me inside the bus. I saw an opportunity to escape from the bus and I did. I jumped out of the bus because of my past experience with policemen. A few months ago, some policemen accosted me at Durba (Lagos) and accused me of being an Internet fraudster without any evidence against me. They took me to First Avenue, FESTAC Town, and collected the only N2,000 on me before I was released. I suffered before I got home that day.”

Adedayo stated that once he jumped down from the bus, he crossed to the other side of the road and ran to the Cele-Okota Bridge. One of the police officers armed with a gun, chased him on a motorcycle.

“When I stopped. The policeman quickly parked his motorcycle and pointed his gun at me, threatening to shoot me. Out of fear, I jumped off the bridge.” he said

Accordng to him, the police officers took to their heels when they discovered he was unconcious. Passersby rushed him to the General hospital, Isolo for treatment.

“I was then rushed to the General Hospital, Isolo, from where I was transferred to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi. I have not reported the incident in any police station because have just been discharged from the hospital,” he said

N65,000 Minimum Wage: Labour Begins Nationwide Strike Thursday

Published

The organised labour has served to warn of an imminent nationwide strike which will kick off on Thursday over Federal Government delay in the implementation of a new National Minimum Wage.

Mr Joe Ajaero, President, United Labour Congress (ULC) gave the warning in a communique issued after its meeting on Monday in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the organised labour, made up of the NLC, TUC and ULC had on Sept. 12 issued a 14-day ultimatum to the government to state an amount to enable the minimum wage committee to conclude its sitting.

Labour had collectively demanded for N65,000 per month as the new National Minimum wage for all Nigerian workers as harmonised by organised Labour.

Ajaero said that if the government failed to meet their demand on the expiration of the ultimatum, it would collaborate with other labour centres and Civil Society Organisations to embark on a nation-wide strike.

”We shall no longer be obliged by this time to give any further notice to the government before embarking on the action.

”By this communiqué, we order all our affiliates and state councils nation-wide to move to the final level of alert in their preparation for the proposed nationwide strike,” he said.

The labour leader said that a new national minimum wage was desirable and possible, adding that lack of patriotism, greed and corruption was the bane of a reasonable wage.

Meanwhile, the Central Working Committee (CWC) of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has empowered the National Administrative Council (NAC) and its leadership to carry out all necessary actions in conjunction with other stakeholders to ensure the achievement of the minimum wage. (NAN)
