The Afenifere Renewal Group has called on governors in the South – West to urgently devise plans to check the killer herdsmen on the rampage across the country before their activities engulf the geopolitical zone.

This is just as the Ekiti State Governor , Mr. Ayodele Fayose , declared support for the call by Nobel laureate , Prof. Wole Soyinka , for an organised resistance against the killer herdsmen.

In a statement on Wednesday by the group’ s National Chairman , Mr. Olawale Oshun , the ARG said it was vital for the governors to wake up to their responsibilities , adding that to do otherwise would be tantamount to courting historical and electoral disaster .

It stated , “Yoruba governors must now come together to find a lasting solution to the marauding herdsmen . They are now causing mayhem in Ekiti , Ondo and Ogun states and we need not wait until they overrun all our territories before waking from our slumber.

“ Two months ago , we had cause to alert all the Yoruba governors and their state governments to the need to be proactive to the Fulani herdsmen’s potential to overrun parts of the South – West in the purported but false search for food for their cattle.

“ We had in seeking that our governors pay attention to the unfolding herdsmen drama been worried by their silence, a silence that in many quarters of Yorubaland is now interpreted as self- serving and cowardly .”

According to the ARG, now that the chickens have come home to roost with real attacks in at least three of the South -West states , it is hoped that the governors will see the need to be prepared to prevent further unwarranted attacks on their people by “ a terrorist group which though widely disclaimed by the nationality they belong to but emboldened by the callous indifference of those who have the power to intervene .’’

Noting that as Nigerians with a desire to keep the country united, the group said it was the responsibility of all nationalities comprising Nigeria to keep it united.

Postpone General Elections To Allow Zamfara APC Field Candidates — AGF Tells INEC

Published

The Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission to allow the All Progressives Congress in Zamfara State field candidates for the general elections.

Malami, who doubles as the Minister of Justice, made the call in a letter to INEC dated February 13 and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria.

The minister said that INEC could not foreclose the right of a political party to participate in elections without recourse to the Act.

He said: “My office received a petition from the firm of M. A. Mahmud, (SAN) & CO, in respect of the need to urgently consider Sections 38 and 39 of the Electoral Act and extend the time for the APC Zamfara to field a gubernatorial candidate in the light of a Zamfara High Court judgment in suit No.ZMS/GS/52/2018.

“The letter was requesting that the subsisting judgment in the suit be upheld and respected by INEC, as the Court of Appeal has upheld the appeal with No. CA/S/23/2019; thus effectively annulling the grounds upon which the purported cancellation of the APC Primaries in Zamfara by INEC was based.”

Malami in the letter invited INEC to comply with the judgment of the Court of Appeal by admitting the results of the APC Zamfara State primaries.

He also invited INEC to comply with the provisions of Section 38 of the Electoral Act, which empowers the commission to postpone the election for the governorship, National Assembly and House of Assembly elections.

He said this was in view of the fact that since the Court of Appeal had upheld the primaries as valid, the APC in Zamfara State would need a little time to catch up with its contemporaries in the election.

He said: “Granting them this concession is not necessarily a favour but a right that inures to all contestants under similar circumstances.”

The AGF maintained that by the doctrine and principle of judicial precedence, the appeal superseded the Federal High Court’s position which foreclosed APC Zamfara State from fielding candidates in the February and March general elections.
